Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Once the implant is in place, a crown, bridge, or denture can be attached to it to restore the appearance and function of the missing tooth. It can help with tooth loss, improve your smile, your oral hygiene, and your overall quality of life in long term.
Dental implants are generally suitable for most people. But there are some factors that may make you ineligible for the procedure such as severe gum disease, active infections and certain medical conditions. If you have any of these conditions, talk to our dentist they can evaluate your individual circumstances and recommend the best treatment plan for you.

During a consultation, your dentist will evaluate the area where there are missing teeth. They will take a dental x-ray to assess the bone quality and quantity in the area. They will also discuss your medical history and overall health to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.
The most commonly used implant procedure is a “staged surgery” procedure. In this procedure, the implant is placed in the jawbone during the first surgery. The second surgery, which is usually performed several months later, involves placing the crown or tooth supported bridge on the implant.

The first stage of a dental implant procedure involves placing the implant into the bone below the gum line. This is done under local anesthesia, so you will be awake but numb during the procedure.
The dentist or oral surgeon will make an incision in your gum tissue to expose the bone. Then, they will use a drill to create a hole in the bone that is the same size as the implant. The implant is then screwed into the hole.
Once the implant is in place, the dentist or oral surgeon will close the incision with stitches. You will need to wait for the implant to heal for several months before moving on to the next stage of the procedure.
Once the implant has fused to the bone, the dentist will perform a second surgery to expose the top of the implant and place a healing abutment. The healing abutment is a small post that fits over the top of the implant and allows the gums to heal around it.
After the gums have healed, the dentist will remove the healing abutment and fabricate a custom crown to fit over the implant. The crown is made of a durable material, such as porcelain or metal, and is designed to look and function like a natural tooth.
Dental implant is a minor surgical procedure. The amount of pain you experience will vary depending on your individual pain tolerance and the extent of the surgery. Most patients report feeling some discomfort after the surgery, but this can be managed with pain medication. The pain usually subsides within a few days.
If you are concerned about pain, talk to our dentist about your options. There are a number of things that can be done to minimize pain, such as using local anesthesia or sedation. Most patients will be very familiar with the dental anaesthetics used for routine dentistry and will know how effective they are. Implants are placed using the same anaesthesia.
Since the surgery normally involves exposing the bone in the area where the implant and/or bone graft is to be placed, you will expect some minor swelling and occasionally bruising afterwards.
To relieve discomfort, simple painkillers commonly used to relieve headaches should suffice. Subsequently, if you experience more discomfort than this, please contact your dentist who can prescribe a stronger medication.
