Painless Dental Injections

Painless dental injections can help patients feel more comfortable during invasive dental procedures.

Most patients want their dental visits to be pain-free. However, for more invasive procedures like tooth extractions, a local anesthetic is injected to numb the area before dental treatment is performed. Local anesthetic is also used for some dental work done to repair decayed teeth.

Our dentists are trained to administer injections with minimal discomfort. Most children respond well to treatment without discomfort, and they can even watch the procedures and have a positive experience. At Smilepoint Dental, we love children. We will explain the procedures to your child using appropriate terms that are easy to understand.

Painless Dental Injections

Did you know that the main source of discomfort during an injection is not actually from the needle itself? The pain is caused by the pressure and volume of fluid being injected into the gums.

Our painless dental injections use advanced technology to deliver local anesthesia in a way that significantly reduces the pain and discomfort of injections in the mouth. We use a computerized system that controls the flow rate and pressure of the anesthetic, which allows us to deliver it more gently and gradually.

This technique is especially popular with adults with dental phobia or anxiety and young children.

Aftercare

Here are some tips for aftercare:

  • Be careful not to accidentally bite or injure the numbed area. This is common among patients because there is often no feeling in the area. It is especially important for children. The feeling of swelling is also normal, as it is a side effect of the numbness.
  • Rest. Take it easy after your dental appointment and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Apply ice. Apply a cold compress to the area where you received the injection to help reduce swelling and pain.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated will help to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Eat soft foods. Avoid eating hard or crunchy foods until the numbness wears off.
  • Brush your teeth gently. Be careful not to brush too hard in the area where you received the injection, as this could irritate the gums.
  • Call your dentist if you have any concerns. If you have any questions or concerns about your aftercare, be sure to call your dentist.

Here are some additional tips that may help you feel more comfortable after your dental appointment:

  • Bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment. Having someone with you can help to ease your anxiety and make you feel more relaxed.
  • Ask your dentist about relaxation techniques. There are a number of relaxation techniques that you can use to help reduce anxiety and pain, such as deep breathing, visualization, and progressive muscle relaxation.
  • Listen to your body. If you are feeling pain or discomfort, don’t hesitate to ask our dentist for pain medication.
