Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can be done in-clinic or at home to lighten the natural color of your teeth and brighten your smile.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a procedure to lighten the natural colour of your teeth. It is a safe and effective cosmetic procedure to remove stains that are on the surface of the enamel and within the tooth structure. It is a bleaching process to take away discolouration and lighten the existing colour of your teeth by several shades without removing any of the tooth surfaces.

Teeth whitening is your smile saver from stains!

If your teeth are stained, teeth whitening is your smile saver. Teeth can become yellow with age and also can become stained on the surface due to lifestyle choices such as daily exposure to tea, coffee, wine and tobacco. Teeth whitening can boost your confidence with witer-brighter teeth for a beautiful smile. Anyone with teeth which are stained from age, coffee, tea or smoking are ideal candidate for teeth whitening. Patients with healthy, natural, and unfilled teeth often achieve good results.

Extrinsic (External) Stains:
The outer layer of the tooth, called the enamel, is stained. This may happen due to;

  • Diet – frequent consumption of coloured foods like coffee, tea, cola, or red wine that stain your teeth.
  • Smoking – nicotine and tar in tobacco will stain your teeth above the gum line, causing your teeth to become yellow-brown.
  • Poor dental hygiene – dental plaque and calculus that form on teeth due to poor dental hygiene can result in the discolouration of teeth.
  • Environmental factors – fluoride can also cause teeth discolouration. Products high in fluorides such as mouthwash or toothpaste can cause your teeth to become discoloured.

Intrinsic (Internal) Stains:
Happens at the deeper layer of the enamel and the dentin (the tissue below the enamel) and gives your teeth a yellowish or greyish hue. There are many reasons for this;

  • Antibiotics– some antibiotics given to children whose teeth are still developing can stain them.
  • Dental Trauma– teeth can be discoloured from the inside out due to bleeding from the tooth itself, which decomposes and leaves a blue-brown stain.
  • Genetic Factors – a small number of people may have congenital discoloured teeth (from birth).
  • Ageing – the outer layer – Ageing of our teeth called the enamel gets eroded with age, exposing the dentin. The dentin starts to yellow as we age, thus appearing stained.

Is Dental Teeth Whitening for you?

Teeth whitening will not work the same for all. We would like to give you a realistic picture than glossy wording. A treatment plan is needed for successful teeth whitening. Naturally, prior to any treatment, a thorough examination and diagnosis will be performed at the clinic. We also recommend scaling and polishing before teeth whitening. Therefore, with the correct guidance and treatment plan you can achieve the desired results, the very reason why dental teeth whitening is suitable for you.

  • The success of teeth whitening depends on the cause of discolouration, how long the teeth have been discoloured and other factors.
  • Teeth darkened with extrinsic or surface stains respond better to bleaching than teeth with deep, intrinsic discolouration caused by Fluoride or Tetracycline.
  • We generally do not recommend bleaching for sensitive or worn teeth; teeth with large fillings or crowns; and teeth affected by gum disease.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

Do you still see yellowish colour or stains on your teeth? This is why teeth whitening is required Regular brushing will keep your teeth clean and healthy, but it will not get the stains out of your teeth or take away discolouration. There are two types of stains that discolour your teeth, external stains and internal stains.

External stains: Frequent consumption of coloured foods like coffee, tea, cola, or red wine, excessive smoking, dental plaque or use of products high in fluoride can stain your outer layer of teeth (enamel surface).

Internal Discolouration: The inner layer of your teeth (yellow dentine) can get stained due to ageing, antibiotics used when young, discolouration from birth (genetic factors) or due to dental trauma (bleeding teeth). These give your teeth a yellowish or greyish hue. Regular brushing may help to some extent in terms of taking away external stains but they do not remove internal discolouration. After a thorough examination and diagnosis at our dental clinic will advise you on an effective whitening procedure to lighten the shade of your teeth’s colour and make sure all stains are removed. While maintaining a good oral hygiene through regular brushing, teeth whitening is an ideal method to gain a whiter smile!

One of the most popular questions but least overlooked. In simple terms with whitening toothpaste your teeth will be clean and most probably shiny, but still may look yellow and stained. There are two different types of teeth discolouration – Internal and external

External stains: Due to frequent intake of coloured foods like coffee, tea, cola, or red wine, excessive smoking, dental plaque or use of products high in fluoride can stain your outer layer of teeth (enamel surface).

Internal Discolouration: The stain is at the inner layer of the teeth (yellow dentine). These stains give your teeth a yellowish or greyish hue. Attributed to ageing, antibiotics used when young, discolouration from birth (genetic factors) or due to dental trauma (bleeding teeth) Whitening toothpaste is mainly a cleaning agent and can remove external stains to a certain extent. They do not remove internal discolouration. At Smilepoint we conduct a thorough examination and diagnosis will be performed by an expert dentist, and a safe and effective whitening procedure will be adopted to make sure all stains are removed. This is an effective and sure way to achieve a whiter smile!

It is only 11.99 at an Online Store! But one issue. Teeth whitening requires an active ingredient to whiten your teeth and by law over-the-counter teeth whitening kits have a restriction by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for the concentration to be 0.1% or less.

Dental clinics employ teeth whitening agents up to 10% and our expert dentists will assess your condition case by case and apply the required level in a safe and effective manner to target both internal and external stains So it is kind of self-explanatory which method is effective. Hence, over-the-counter kits even though they are cheaper, the chances are lesser that they will effectively whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening is a complicated treatment procedure that should only be carried out by a dentist after a thorough examination and assessment of your teeth and gums.

Spas and saloons seem affordable and Sensible, right? All done in one place and we sure love to have a good bargain, but again the same restriction applies to them for teeth whitening as non-dentists. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has restricted the use of active agents in teeth whitening concentration to 0.1% or less.

A non-medical professional will only allow a low or ineffective amount of whitening agent and will not make your teeth as white as you expected. Further complications can arise due to ill preparation and can result in chemical burns and excessive bleaching This does not mean the most expensive teeth whitening solution should be chosen, but cost and convenience should not be the only guiding factor. At Smilepoint we have a range of teeth whitening packages that will effectively and safely bring you the smile you always dreamed of at a reasonable cost and most importantly desired results!

Current research shows no changes to the tooth surface or tooth structure with the use of 10% bleaching gel. Our experienced and professional dentists will always assess your condition before beginning any treatment, so you can be sure that you are in good hands.

Toothpaste containing Potassium Nitrate or a prescription level of Fluoride can help seal the microscopic tubules (dentin pores) to prevent nerve irritation and sensitivity. There are also professional products available that your dentist can apply to the affected area.

It’s important to have realistic expectations of before and after whitening. Generally, immediately after teeth whitening, the colour will fade very slightly. This may remain stable for approximately 2 years, sometimes longer. However, several factors such as your diet and habits (eg. smoking) can cause staining to occur again. We recommend patients to get touch-ups every 3-6 months to maintain your desired shade.
