Retainers in Singapore

At SmilePoint Dental Clinic, our expert dentists prescribe retainers to secure the perfect alignment of your teeth,
working seamlessly with other orthodontic treatments for lasting results.

How do Retainers work?

Retainers are essential in orthodontic care to preserve teeth alignment post-braces. They prevent natural shifting by applying gentle, consistent pressure. There are fixed, unseen retainers, and removable ones for convenience. Fixed retainers remain discreetly affixed to the back of teeth, while removable ones can be taken out for meals and cleaning. Following the orthodontist’s guidance, patients initially wear retainers full-time, gradually transitioning to nighttime use. Duration varies, but regular check-ups ensure effective retention of corrected tooth positions. In a concise manner, retainers play a pivotal role in sustaining a straight and well-aligned smile after orthodontic treatment.

Types of Braces in Singapore

There are now more types of braces available in Singapore than ever before. The most common and traditional type is metal braces. Other types include ceramic braces, lingual braces, self-ligating braces, and Invisalign.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are popular and inexpensive. They are made of high-quality stainless steel and are attached to the teeth with adhesive. Metal braces cannot be removed by the wearer.

Ceramic Braces Singapore

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, but the bands are tooth-colored or clear, so they don’t stand out as much. Some even use wires that look like teeth to make them even less noticeable.

Benefits & Side Effects

A beautiful smile is timeless, no matter the age

The advantages of adult braces go far beyond a beautiful smile. They improve all aspects of your lifestyle, from your self-esteem to your oral hygiene.

  • Good looks, a great smile, and more confidence: Perfect smiles enhance confidence and mental health. Further research shows that irregular teeth spacing affects partner choice and may indicate opposite-sex attraction. Braces improve jaw-tooth proportions and simplify a makeover.
  • Cleaner breath: Unclean teeth can cause bad breath. Overcrowded or crooked teeth often harbor bacteria, and food gets stuck between teeth. These particles become harder to brush and floss away. Straight teeth are easier to clean, and that means cleaner breath.
  • Smoother speech: Your tongue’s movement against your teeth affects word pronunciation. Misaligned teeth often cause lisps and can affect speech. Therefore, braces can improve speech.
  • Less cavities and gum disease: Plaque can build up on crowded, overlapping, or crooked teeth, making brushing and flossing difficult. Proper brushing preserves tooth enamel and prevents cavities. It can also reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Reduced tooth injury: Braces may minimize tooth trauma. Accidents can break teeth, often due to sports or falls. Some teeth stick out more than others, making them more susceptible to harm. When your teeth are straight, you are less likely to bite your tongue or face, and accidental tooth damage is less likely.
  • Improved bite & faster digestion: Braces aid digestion by reducing gaps and making chewing easier. Teeth braces speed up stomach digestion. Gas, bloating, and other gastrointestinal troubles are less likely.
  • Stronger Jawbones: Teeth location affects jawbone. Misaligned teeth can stress the bone when chewing, which may lead to later jaw bone erosion. When teeth are straightened, stress on the jaw joints and uneven tooth wear are no longer a problem.

Common & temporary side effects of braces

  • Minor discomfort: Adults who are unfamiliar with braces may feel some discomfort. The first few weeks may be the most uncomfortable.
  • Eating problems: Braces can make eating difficult for adults. This is one of the most common side effects, as braces restrict tooth movement.
  • Speech problems: Tight metal cables and brackets can make it difficult for adults to speak properly. Most adults with braces lisp.
  • Jaw pain: Jaw pain is the most common braces face side effect. Tight braces can cause tooth and jaw pain, especially if jaw therapy was done before braces.
  • Itching: Due to their unfamiliarity with metal wires and brackets, most teens and adults may experience irritation when wearing braces.
  • Oral ulcers: Early mouth sores from braces are common after discomfort.
  • Disrupted eating: Braces can disrupt eating for adults because they can’t eat everything and must chew carefully.
  • Allergies: Adults may have latex rubber allergies from braces or metal wire.
  • Extra oral hygiene duty: After wearing braces, individuals must be especially careful with their oral hygiene regimen because it takes longer to brush teeth and food won’t stay to the braces. Adults must be responsible. Thus, adult orthodontics has a best age.
  • Plaque formation: Plaque buildup around braces and teeth can cause tooth decay if people don’t take extra cleanliness precautions.

Aftercare

Taking good care of your braces is just as crucial to your success as having them fitted initially.

Taking good care of your braces is just as crucial to your success as having them fitted initially.

After getting braces, some people have minimal issues, while others have a harder time adjusting. If you’re struggling to deal with your braces, here are some helpful pointers for aftercare:

  • Brush and floss your teeth twice a day. This is even more important when you have braces, as plaque can build up more easily around the brackets and wires. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss with a special floss threader or interdental brush.
  • Avoid sticky foods. Sticky foods, such as caramel, taffy, and gum, can get stuck in your braces and make it difficult to remove. They can also damage your braces.
  • Avoid hard foods. Hard foods, such as apples, carrots, and ice, can also damage your braces. If you must eat these foods, cut them into small pieces.
  • See your orthodontist for regular checkups. Your orthodontist will need to adjust your braces periodically as your teeth move. They will also check for any problems with your braces.
