Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
Tooth extraction is necessary to prevent pain and swelling, or to remove severely infected or decayed tooth. If a tooth is too loose, extraction may be the only option. Orthodontic treatment may also require extractions of certain teeth, usually the premolars and wisdom teeth.
Is Tooth Extraction Painful?
Tooth extraction can be painful, but it is usually not excruciating. The amount of pain you experience will depend on the type of extraction and your overall health. If you have a simple extraction, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area. This will prevent you from feeling any pain during the procedure. You may still feel some pressure or discomfort, but it should not be severe.

Tooth Extraction Procedure in Singapore
1. Consultation
Our dentist will take an X-ray of the patient’s tooth to evaluate the curvature and angle of the tooth’s root.
2. Extraction
Local anesthetic is applied. Once it has numbed the area, the surgeon will begin the extraction. The tooth may be removed in several pieces.
3. Post-extraction
The wound will be stitched up. A thick layer of gauze will then be placed over the extracted area. The patient should bite down on the gauze to absorb the blood and start the clotting process.

Tooth Removal Aftercare
Controlling pain
The numbness from the local anesthetic should wear off after a few hours. If the numbness persists, please contact us. We will also prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication after the procedure.
Controlling swelling
Mild facial swelling in the area of the extraction is a normal side effect. To reduce the swelling, you may apply ice to the face.
Changing dental gauze
After the extraction, the gauze must remain in place for at least 20–30 minutes to exert pressure on the wound and stop bleeding. Replace the gauze whenever it becomes soaked with blood. The bleeding will likely last for 1–2 hours after the extraction.
Eating
It is important to drink plenty of fluids and consume soft foods. You can chew on the side opposite from the extraction site until the wound has fully healed.
Avoiding agitating the extraction area
To ensure that the wound heals properly, it is important to avoid agitating the area. This means avoiding the following:
- Sucking or touching the extraction area with your tongue.
- Using a straw.
- Eating solid (especially crunchy) food.
- Drinking alcoholic beverages or using mouthwash containing alcohol.
- Rinsing your mouth vigorously.
- Smoking
Oral hygiene
It is important to continue to brush and floss as per normal, but be careful not to agitate the extraction area. Following the surgery, you can rinse with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt and 1 cup of water) every few hours.
