Help! What’s a dentist? And why do I need to go?

A dentist can straighten your teeth. They can talk to you about whether you need to have any braces.

What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment usually involves wearing braces to straighten your teeth. To make space to straighten your teeth, sometimes you may have to have some teeth taken out by your own dentist.

But why would I need braces?

To make teeth and smile better
To make bite better
To make it easier to eat
To make it easier to clean my teeth

What kinds of braces are there?

There are different types of braces. Fixed braces are known as train tracks and are attached to your teeth.

What happens when I go to the dentist?

The dentist examines your face, mouth, and teeth, taking photographs and x-rays. They may also make moulds of your teeth by having you bite into special material. Then, the dentist discusses the necessary treatment with you and your parent.

What if I don’t want to wear braces?

Talk to your dentist about this. They will explain the best time to have your braces fitted. Your treatment will be easier and shorter if you don’t leave it too late.

What if I’m scared of dentists?

Inform your parent and dentist if you’re worried about having braces. Your dentist will gladly discuss your concerns and answer any questions you have.

How long will my treatment take?

Treatment with braces can take between 1 and 3 years. Missing appointments or breaking your braces will mean that your treatment will take longer.

Will braces hurt?

It might hurt a bit when your braces are first fitted and sometimes when they are adjusted. This will not last long. You can take a painkiller if you need to – ask your parent first. You might get ulcers, but you can use wax to cover your braces.

How do I clean my teeth?

It is very important that you brush your teeth very carefully, at least twice a day. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to do this. Make sure you use a fluoride toothpaste to help
prevent tooth decay.

Do I still need to see my regular dentist?

Yes, you still need to have check-ups with your own dentist at Smilepoint to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.

Will I need to wear another brace after my treatment is finished?

Yes, usually. This brace is a retainer. You wear it to make sure your teeth stay straight after the first brace has done its job.

What if I play contact sports?

Wear a gum shield. Ask your dentist at Smilepoint about this.

What if I play a musical instrument?

First, inform your music teacher and your dentist. Then, they will work together to ensure that your brace does not prevent you from playing.

How often will I need an appointment?

You will need regular appointments for your dentist to adjust your brace.

What do I do when my brace breaks?

Tell your parent, contact Smilepoint Dental Centre for an appointment as soon as possible or contact us via WhatsApp. Do not wait for your next routine appointment, as the breakage may slow your treatment or result in damage to your teeth.
